Grand opening of Music Centre

On Friday, March 31, an enthusiastic group of students, parents, faculty and staff packed the newly renovated Music Centre to celebrate its official opening.

The newest addition to the GNS Arts Program features additional natural lighting and extensive storage space for instruments of all shapes and sizes. A dedicated area on the second floor will house the school’s various choral offerings, and two sound-proofed rehearsal spaces allow musicians to hone their skills without interruption.

As Head of Arts, Steve Thompson, noted during his poignant remarks, the new Music Centre is a “game-changer.” His sentiments were echoed by Choir Director, Marvin Regier, with both speaking to the new life the facility has already breathed into two of GNS’ flagship Arts offerings.

Deputy Head, Chad Holtum, was quick to note the timing of the opening was perfect, given that April is Annual Appeal Awareness Month at GNS. It was gifts from last year’s Annual Fund—combined with the support of the Parents’ Auxiliary and a number of Major Donors—that allowed this fully-funded project to be realized.

“When we were first approached about the possibility of a new music centre, we were happy to support that project,” said Cheryl Handley, a current parent and donor. “Music has played a huge part in both of our daughters’ GNS experience and the thought of making it even better was something we felt strongly about getting behind.”

Mr. Holtum pointed to the Music Centre as proof of both the school’s commitment to the Arts as a foundational element of a well-rounded education, and of the power of collective philanthropy.

“Every time I watch a performance at the Hall, I am reminded of what an incredible difference great facilities make to the students and teachers,” said current parent and donor Claudia Blum. “Our music programs are so excellent and I wanted to help provide another space that will elevate the arts at GNS.”

With all the recent news about the upcoming rejuvenation of the Junior School campus on Beach Drive, it is important not to overlook the significant improvements to Pemberton Woods in the last five years. The Music Centre joins the Hall, the Turf, the Dining Centre and the Scott Fitness Centre as significant recent upgrades to the Pemberton Woods campus, with many more projects large and small in the works.

Among the priorities for this year’s Annual Appeal is a comprehensive renovation of the Gudewill Gym. Provided that funding is secured, building will commence in the summer. Stay tuned!
